Welcome to Fifth Grade

Terra Vista Elementary School logo

Miss Burke

I am so excited to be on fifth grade team! I have been in the Etiwanda School District since 2007 and have experience teaching fifth and second grade. I have spent the last five years teaching in second grade. This is my third year teaching fifth grade. I am looking forward to another great year at Terra Vista.

I received my Master's Degree in Elementary Education and my Teaching Credential from the University of Phoenix. I also have an inclusive classroom teaching certificate from the University of La Verne. I have my bachelor’s degree in Sociology from California State University of San Bernardino. I have lived in the Fontana/Rancho Cucamonga area for the last twenty plus years. I am an avid lover of reading and I am always looking for a great quote. When I am not at school I enjoy going to the movies, watching television, playing video games, and spending time with my family and friends.

Our classroom mission is to create a positive and welcoming environment. I want all students to feel safe in the classroom and develop a love of learning. In our classroom we will always give our best effort because mistakes are proof that we are trying. We focus on a growth mindset that allows our brains to grow while we learn and encourage others. We work on modeling our school behaviors to be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. I am looking forward to a great year!

Suggested Supply List

Many families have asked us for a list of supplies they could donate in the classroom.  This is a suggested list of items that our grade level teachers have identified as useful for our instructional purposes.  The purchase of any of these items is voluntary, and no student will be denied participation if donation is not made.  Donated items will be for whole class use unless otherwise indicated.

Battle of the Books Participation and Rules

Thank you for choosing to become a member of Terra Vista Elementary School’s Battle of the Books Club.  The reading of good literature from different genres, the practice of good sportsmanship, the development of leadership skills, and just plain FUN are some of the many benefits you will gain with your participation in BOB.  We have planned three mandatory meetings that will take place prior to the District Competition.

We are here to encourage and cheer for your reading success only; therefore it is your responsibility to meet the requirements of the number of books read and to attend all meetings.  If you do not meet the requirements by the deadlines you will not be allowed to attend the meetings, celebrations or the District Competition. We have provided a list of the 2023-2024 BOB titles on a chart to help you keep track of your success.  You are responsible for recording the BOB books you have read and tested on in your BOB folder in the library. It is important to know who wants to participate in Battle of the Books.

Please submit the contract by Friday, August ___to Mrs. Lovato  in the Terra Vista Elementary Library.

We are looking forward to getting to know you and to a rewarding year of reading.  Should you have any questions regarding involvement in Terra Vista Elementary School’s Battle of the Books, you may contact the advisors, Miss Burke or Mrs. Lovato.

Thank you and HAPPY READING!
