Carleton P. Lightfoot Elementary School Named 2020 National Blue Ribbon School

(Rancho Cucamonga) Carleton P. Lightfoot Elementary School has been named as a 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award winner by the U.S. Department of Education. The program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on academic performance and progress toward closing achievement gaps among student groups. Carleton P. Lightfoot Elementary School was among 367 winners nationwide announced today by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

"I commend the entire Carleton P. Lightfoot community for being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School,” said Superintendent Dr. Shawn Judson. “This prestigious honor is a result of the diligence and dedication demonstrated by the teachers, staff, students, and families."

The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 38th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed almost 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools, with some schools winning multiple awards. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years.

The Education Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories based on all student and student group scores:

Exemplary High Performing Schools – These are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools – These are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between student groups.

The U.S. Department of Education will formally recognize all the honored schools in virtual recognition ceremonies on November 12 and 13, 2020.

Carleton P. Lightfoot Elementary is among the state's highest performing schools in closing gaps in achievement between student groups over the past five years. The school attributes its success to a combination of data-driven decision making and a long-term commitment to supporting every student as they learn and grow. While the school’s system of standards-based education is driven by high expectations, their number one focus is on developing the whole child.
