Five Etiwanda Schools Named as
2020 California Distinguished Schools

The Etiwanda School District is proud to announce that five of their elementary schools, Carleton P. Lightfoot, Cecilia L. Solorio, Etiwanda Colony, Perdew, and, West Heritage Elementary Schools have been named as 2020 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education (CDE).

Schools were eligible to apply for the 2020 California Distinguished School award based upon their performance and progress on the state indicators as described on the California School Dashboard. Indicators include test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and climate. Winners represent examples of schools that demonstrate excellent teaching, learning, and collaboration in addition to having highly successful school climates.

“These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation,” Thurmond said. “Thanks go to all the staff at these schools—teachers, administrators, classified employees—and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students.”

Etiwanda School District Superintendent, Dr. Shawn Judson, added, “We are very proud of all of our principals, teachers, students, staff, and parents who work together in innovative ways to ensure our children thrive in school. This is a wonderful accomplishment for our schools, and a testament to the hard work of our community.”

Only 323 schools across the state, and only 19 schools within San Bernardino County, are receiving this award, presented to schools for closing the achievement gap and for exceptional student performance. The schools will receive their awards at a ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on February 10, 2020.

About Etiwanda School District: The Etiwanda School District has provided ‘Excellence in Education’ for students since its beginning in 1883. The district has grown from a rural one-school district to a mid-sized suburban district that provides an exemplary instructional program for approximately 14,000 students at 17 school sites: thirteen (K-5) elementary schools and four (6-8) middle schools. The District also offers a Preschool Program and Transitional Kindergarten. The rich history of the Etiwanda school system and the value of education have always played an important role in this community.

The Etiwanda School District is dedicated to promoting high standards in curriculum, instruction, performance, and personal growth. It is our goal that each student achieves academic excellence and develops respect for self and others so they become contributing members of our culturally diverse society. The responsibility for the development of these qualities in all students is accomplished through a cooperative effort among students, parents, staff, and community.
